Al Ahli and Al Duhail Battle to a 2-2 Stalemate, Marking 20 Matches Unbeaten in ACL Elite

KSAsportz report

DOHA — In a thrilling encounter on Monday, Al Ahli FC saw their impressive eight-match winning streak in the AFC Champions League come to an end but managed to extend their unbeaten run to a record-equalling 20 games with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Al Duhail SC in Qatar.

The defending champions initially fell behind in the 25th minute when Krzysztof Piatek flicked on a goal kick to Adil Boubina. Boubina’s shot struck the post, allowing Edmilson Junior to capitalize on the rebound and put Al Duhail ahead.

Al Duhail’s night took a turn for the worse seven minutes later when debutant goalkeeper Arthus Desmas sustained a head injury, necessitating his replacement by Bautista Burke. Burke faced immediate pressure, and just before halftime, Matheus Goncalves skillfully cut inside defender Youssef Ayman, unleashing a low shot that found the back of the net, leveling the score at 1-1.

The match took an unexpected twist as Burke made a crucial mistake in first-half stoppage time, misplaying a pass that landed at the feet of Riyad Mahrez. The Algerian winger coolly slotted the ball into an empty net, giving Al Ahli a 2-1 lead.

However, Djamel Belmadi’s side responded quickly after the restart. Edmilson once again played a pivotal role, delivering a precise cross for Piatek to convert with a powerful header in the 47th minute.

This marked Piatek’s fifth goal in the tournament, contributing to his growing tally of 23 goals across all competitions this season. The Polish striker later missed a golden opportunity, firing a volley over from close range that could have tilted the game in Al Duhail’s favor.

Despite persistent pressure from Al Ahli, including a late surge led by Ivan Toney, Burke redeemed himself with an impressive save that preserved the draw.

The result keeps Al Ahli unbeaten in continental competition but marks the end of their perfect start in this campaign. In contrast, Al Duhail’s performance earned them a well-deserved point, reflecting a spirited display against the reigning champions. With this match, Al Ahli remains at the top of Group A with 24 points from 9 matches, while Al Duhail stands fourth with 12 points after the same number of games.
