Saudi Basketball Federation Expands Vision with New National League Format

Riyadh, October 12, 2025 — The Saudi Basketball Federation has announced a major update to its national league structure, introducing a revamped format designed to boost competition and prepare local talent for international tournaments.

The announcement marks another milestone in Saudi Arabia’s rapid sports evolution — this time focusing on basketball, a sport that’s been quietly gaining traction across the Kingdom.

The New Structure

The updated league will feature 16 teams, divided into two conferences to increase regional participation and reduce travel costs. The format includes:

  • A longer regular season with home-and-away matches.
  • A new playoff system with best-of-three semifinal series.
  • Youth development requirements, obligating each club to field at least two players under 21 in every matchday squad.

According to the Federation, these changes aim to “create a stronger foundation for national-team development” and make the domestic league more attractive to sponsors and fans.

A Step Toward Global Recognition

Saudi basketball has grown in profile thanks to hosting major international events, including FIBA 3×3 tournaments and friendly exhibitions featuring global stars. The Federation’s next step is to secure Saudi participation in the Asian Champions League and eventually target qualification for the FIBA World Cup.

Officials emphasized that this transformation aligns with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 plan to diversify its sports ecosystem beyond football, investing in emerging disciplines with strong youth appeal.

Players and Fans React

Local players and coaches welcomed the new league format. Veteran guard Fahad Al-Sunaidi called it “a turning point for Saudi basketball,” adding that “it gives players real competition, structure, and visibility.”

Meanwhile, fans in cities like Riyadh and Jeddah have begun rallying behind their teams, with growing online communities and social media engagement.

KSAsportz Outlook

The Saudi Basketball Federation’s decision reflects confidence in the Kingdom’s next generation of athletes. With expanded opportunities, better competition, and stronger organization, basketball could soon become one of Saudi Arabia’s most exciting sporting success stories — proving once again that the nation’s sporting vision extends far beyond the football pitch.
