HONG KONG — In a thrilling showdown, Al Nassr overcame a first-half red card to defeat Al Ittihad 2-1 in the Saudi Super Cup semi-finals on Tuesday. This dramatic victory secures Al Nassr’s place in the final, which is set for August 23, against the winner of the Al Ahli vs. Al Qadsiah semi-final.
Sadio Mané and João Félix both played pivotal roles, with Mané scoring the opener in the 10th minute. He capitalized on a precise pass from Croatian midfielder Marcelo Brozović, helping Al Nassr seize an early 1-0 lead.
However, Al Ittihad quickly responded, equalizing just six minutes later. Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn took advantage of defensive confusion, netting the equalizer in the 16th minute, shifting the momentum of a frenetic first half.
The match took a significant turn in the 25th minute when Saudi referee Khalid Al-Turais issued a straight red card to Mané, reducing Al Nassr to 10 men. Despite this setback, Al Nassr demonstrated remarkable resilience and tactical discipline throughout the match.
Statistically, Al Nassr managed to maintain 52% possession and recorded 10 shots, six of which were on target, reflecting their continued offensive threat despite being a man down.
The decisive moment came in the 60th minute when Cristiano Ronaldo showcased his exceptional vision, threading a perfectly weighted ball to João Félix, who clinically finished past the Al Ittihad goalkeeper. The goal, initially reviewed by VAR, was ultimately upheld, restoring Al Nassr’s lead.
Despite facing pressure from Al Ittihad in the closing minutes, including a surge of attacks, Al Nassr’s defense held firm. They successfully repelled every attempt, culminating in a gritty victory.
Ronaldo’s leadership, combined with Brozović’s midfield control and Félix’s finishing prowess, ensured Al Nassr advances to the final, maintaining hope for another piece of silverware this season.
