JEDDAH — In a significant move as the new season approaches, Al Ahli has finalized the signing of 20-year-old Brazilian midfielder Matheus Gonçalves from Flamengo on a contract that extends until 2027. This strategic acquisition aims to bolster the Jeddah club’s lineup for upcoming competitions.
Gonçalves, who successfully passed his medical examination before joining the first team in Jeddah, had a standout performance last season with Flamengo. In 18 matches, he created 15 scoring opportunities and scored five goals, showcasing his skills with an impressive 66 successful dribbles.
Al Ahli’s commitment to enhancing their squad is evident, as they confirmed this deal is part of a broader strategy focused on injecting youthful talent into the team to support both domestic and continental aspirations. According to club sources, over 60% of their recent signings are under the age of 25, reflecting a clear investment in the future.
Gonçalves isn’t alone in this influx of young talent; numerous reports indicate that Al Ahli has also secured French prodigy Valentin Atangana from Stade de Reims. The club has purchased the remainder of his contract, successfully fending off interest from notable teams such as Chelsea and Strasbourg.
Moreover, the squad’s depth has been further enhanced with the addition of defender Zakaria Hawsawi, who joins on a season-long loan from Al Raed. This move significantly expands the roster options available to manager Matthias Jaissle.
