FIFA includes Saudi sensation Salem Al Dawsari in the nominees for the 2025 ‘The Best’ award.

RIYADH — In a remarkable recognition of his talent, Saudi Arabia’s Salem Al Dawsari has made the expanded shortlist for FIFA’s 2025 “The Best” World 11. He stands out as the only Saudi player in the lineup following an exceptional season representing both his club and the national team.

Al Dawsari’s inclusion highlights the increasing prominence of Saudi players and the national league on the international football stage. Notably, the Saudi Pro League has surged in popularity, drawing in a global fanbase of approximately 30 million followers, making it one of the most watched leagues in Asia.

Noteworthy players from other leagues, including Al Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, defender Kalidou Koulibaly, and Al Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo, are also featured in the shortlist. Italian striker Mateo Retegui, who recently transferred to Al Qadsiah, further underscores the league’s attractiveness to high-caliber talent.

The rising technical proficiency and global appeal of the Saudi Pro League are evident, reflecting a significant shift in the football landscape. FIFA recently unveiled the shortlist for the 2025 “The Best” Men’s Player award, which includes prominent Arab stars such as Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi, as well as other elite players. Voting for this prestigious accolade is currently open to fans until November 28 on FIFA’s official platforms.

Salah had a commendable Premier League season, leading Liverpool to the title and guiding Egypt to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Likewise, Hakimi was instrumental in Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League victory.

Additionally, the shortlist showcases the extraordinary talent of Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, Portuguese stars Nuno Mendes and Vitinha, as well as Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer. Notable figures from La Liga, including Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé, also made an appearance.

The 2025 World 11 expanded shortlist comprises 21 celebrated goalkeepers, featuring the likes of Alisson Becker, Thibaut Courtois, and Manuel Neuer. The defensive lineup boasts players such as Pau Cubarsi, Alphonso Davies, and Rúben Dias.

In midfield, emerging talents like Cole Palmer and Declan Rice stand alongside seasoned stars Bernardo Silva and Federico Valverde. Meanwhile, the attacking shortlist is illuminated by football luminaries including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Vinícius Júnior.
