For Ruba Mohammed Al-Masri, the sword is more than just equipment—it is a pen used to write a new chapter of Saudi history. A Madinah native raised in Riyadh, Ruba first picked up a sabre in 2018 while still in high school. What began as a moment of curiosity quickly transformed into a lifelong path, turning a student into a pioneer of Saudi fencing.
Fencing wasn’t exactly a common pursuit for young women in the Kingdom when Ruba started, but she had a strong advocate in her corner. “I actually discovered it through my father, who’s always been an athlete and encouraged me to explore,” she explains.
The attraction was immediate and cerebral. “The first time I held a sabre, I was captivated by its mix of precision, speed, and elegance. It’s both mental and physical—like a chess match at lightning speed.”
That mental sharpness led to a historic breakthrough: a bronze medal at the U23 European Championships. Standing on that international podium was a turning point, but for Ruba, the real victory lay in the influence she could exert off the piste.
“Being appointed as Saudi Arabia’s first female FISU Student-Sports Ambassador gave me a platform to inspire other young women who dream of competing at the highest level.”
Success in fencing requires a rare blend of patience and aggression. Ruba credits the sport with teaching her that talent is only the starting line; the rest is resilience. “Every defeat is a lesson, every injury a reminder of how much you want it. The piste teaches you humility and courage in equal measure.”
To maintain this focus during the chaos of competition, she turns inward. “I always take a few minutes alone—just me, my headphones, and deep breathing. I visualize every move, every touch. And I never forget to whisper ‘Bismillah’ before stepping onto the piste. It centers me.”
What many don’t see behind the elegance of the sabre is the grueling schedule Ruba maintains. Her life is a high-stakes balancing act, juggling academic studies in law and a career as a marketer across three different companies while training at an elite level.
“There were times when it felt impossible,” she admits. “But I learned how to adapt, to prioritize, and to lean on my team and family when I needed strength.” Even an elite athlete needs an escape—for Ruba, that’s indulging her inner “WWE nerd” or enjoying a coffee (perhaps a bit too much for a sport that requires steady hands).
As the landscape of Saudi sport evolves with unprecedented support from the Ministry of Sports, Ruba sees herself as a guardian of the future. Her message to the next generation is clear: you don’t need permission to chase excellence.
“Every time I wear the green and white, I’m representing a new chapter for Saudi women. Believe that your dreams are valid even if no one around you has done it before. Start, stay consistent, and trust that the world will make space for your passion.”
Ruba Al-Masri’s journey is proof that the sharpest blade is a focused mind. By balancing the rigors of law, marketing, and international sport, she isn’t just winning medals—she is ensuring that the next generation of Saudi girls will find their own place on the piste, ready to fight for their dreams.
