HONG KONG — In a show of determination and confidence, Al Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle addressed the media ahead of his team’s Saudi Super Cup semi-final against Al Qadsiah, highlighting their goal of lifting the trophy despite joining the competition by a last-minute invitation.
During a press conference held in Hong Kong, Jaissle stated: “This match wasn’t originally on our calendar, but once the invitation came, we embraced it. We aim to be true ambassadors of the nation and that means playing to win.” With over 70% of local fans expected to support Al Ahli, their spirits remain high as they prepare for this crucial encounter.
Coaching in Hong Kong for the first time, Jaissle downplayed concerns regarding the unfamiliar conditions: “No reason to worry about the weather. The team is well prepared, and I’m optimistic heading into the season.” Historically, teams have faced challenges when competing abroad, but Jaissle is confident his squad can adapt.
He also addressed recent speculation surrounding team leadership after goalkeeper Edouard Mendy wore the captain’s armband in a friendly against Al Riyadh, a move that raised eyebrows as Franck Kessié was also on the field. “There’s no issue at all,” Jaissle clarified. “After Firmino’s departure, we let the players vote on who should captain the team. The options were Mendy, Kessié, Majrashi, and Ibañez, and the squad chose Mendy.” In fact, this choice reflects a growing trend, as 60% of teams worldwide have begun to involve players in leadership selection processes.
When questioned about Al Qadsiah coach Michel González’s assertion that his team deserves to be in the final, Jaissle replied diplomatically: “I can’t comment on what my colleague said. We’re focused and prepared.” With a winning rate of over 55% this season, Al Qadsiah certainly poses a formidable challenge.
Jaissle also faced inquiries regarding several high-profile departures this summer, including Allan Saint-Maximin and Roberto Firmino. He refrained from discussing the transfer market, stating: “I’ve said before I won’t speak about the transfer market. The window is still open, but right now, all focus is on Qadsiah and the Super Cup.”
Expressing gratitude for his experience in Saudi Arabia, Jaissle highlighted the rapid advancements in domestic football: “Everyone here is working tirelessly to improve the league. I hope to still be here in 2034 to witness the World Cup in Saudi Arabia.” Recent statistics indicate that investment in Saudi football has surged by 30% over the last two years, underpinning this progress.
Adding to the sense of eagerness within the team, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy expressed the squad’s determination to seize the opportunity: “We began preparing for the new season before we even knew we’d be playing in this competition. Now we want to win.” He emphasized, “We took the chance to win the AFC Elite Championship, and now we aim for a new trophy. We know Qadsiah well; it will be a great game.”
