ALKHOBAR — In a pivotal move to bolster their midfield, Al Qadsiah has signed German international Julian Weigl as part of the club’s ongoing squad reshaping ahead of the Roshn Saudi League season. The announcement comes as teams prepare for what is expected to be a highly competitive league, with an estimated 30% increase in player transfers this year compared to last.
At 29, Weigl brings a wealth of top-level experience to Al Qadsiah. He is well-regarded for his composure, positional discipline, and ability to dictate tempo from deep, factors that are critical for defensive midfielders in the modern game.
Weigl’s presence is anticipated to provide essential balance to the team, addressing the gaps that surfaced in recent matches and offering much-needed stability in front of the back line. Last season, Al Qadsiah struggled with defensive inconsistencies, conceding 1.5 goals per match.
This new signing aligns with the recent departure of Argentine U-23 standout Ezequiel Fernández, who has officially joined Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen after a brief stint in Saudi Arabia, where he made just five appearances.
Al Qadsiah confirmed that Weigl is expected to make his debut in the team’s eagerly awaited clash against Al Hilal in Matchweek 2, scheduled for just 10 days from now. This match is particularly significant as Al Hilal finished last season as runners-up, highlighting the competitive nature of the league.
Meanwhile, the club is actively finalizing further foreign signings before the transfer window closes. Negotiations for Al Nassr’s Portuguese midfielder Otávio are ongoing, contingent on the successful completion of Spanish midfielder Cameron Puertas’ anticipated move abroad. The outcome of these negotiations could significantly influence the dynamics of the upcoming season.
