DOHA — In a tense exchange during Monday’s pre-match press conference, Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Nawaf Al Aqidi addressed questions from an Omani journalist regarding the Kingdom’s financial investment in the Saudi Pro League and its impact on the national team’s performance.
Al Aqidi initiated his response with a reminder to the reporter, emphasizing proper identification: “My name is Nawaf Al Aqidi, that’s first.” This assertion came as the Saudi football community responds to ongoing scrutiny amid significant investments in sports infrastructure.
He elaborated, “We support our leadership in the development of Saudi football. This is our spending, and we invest in any field we choose. Our goal is development, and for that reason, we continue to invest.” Recent reports indicate that Saudi Arabia’s investments in football have exceeded $1.7 billion over the past few years, underscoring the Kingdom’s commitment to elevating its sporting presence.
Al Aqidi confidently asserted, “The Saudi national team has always had the upper hand over Oman. Today we are at the World Cup, and we will play in the next World Cup as well. We will appear better in every competition because we are developing.” Statistical records show that Saudi Arabia has secured victories against Oman in 21 out of 33 matches played, solidifying their dominance in regional football.
The goalkeeper further stated, “Tomorrow the Saudi national team will show who we are, just as it happens every time. As I said, we are improving in all areas, and we are happy and proud of that,” indicating a confidence that comes from consistent improvement.
Earlier in the press conference, Al Aqidi highlighted the significance of the upcoming Arab Cup, noting, “The Arab Cup is important for us and we are looking forward to starting well,” while expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from Saudi fans, especially in light of the national team’s two previous title wins in the prestigious tournament.
