The recent Dota 2 championship, contested by Team Spirit and Team Falcons during the Riyadh event, drew a large and passionate audience. Mike McCabe, COO of the Esports World Cup Foundation, emphasized that strong governmental support and a comprehensive national gaming strategy are vital for the industry’s expansion, aligning with the broader objectives of Vision 2030.
.Local gaming enthusiasts, such as Hassan Al Himyari, have noted a significant uptick in youth engagement and awareness within the gaming community, with popular titles like PUBG, Fortnite, and Valorant seeing widespread play.This year marks the second iteration of the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, featuring more than 2,000 participants from 84 countries. The tournament, which concludes on August 24, boasts a substantial $70 million prize pool and includes widely played games such as Dota 2, Rennsport, and Valorant.
Esports and gaming are central to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030, a plan designed to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy and lessen its dependence on oil revenues. In 2022, the Savvy Games Group, an entity of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), committed 142 billion riyals ($37.8 billion) to transform the kingdom into a global gaming hub. This ambitious plan seeks to foster the creation of 250 domestic game development firms, generate 39,000 employment opportunities, and elevate the gaming sector’s economic contribution to 50 billion riyals by 2030.
