RIYADH — In a surprising turn of events, Al Hilal confirmed that Brazilian left back Renan Lodi has unilaterally terminated his contract with the club upon returning to Brazil. This news comes as the Saudi Pro League team prepares for a competitive season.

According to Hisham Al Khathiri, the club’s communications director, Lodi’s departure occurred on Saturday evening. The club reported that Al Hilal’s management had not received any official communication prior to Lodi’s exit, aside from a letter from the player’s legal representative announcing the contract termination. Al Khathiri emphasized the club’s commitment to ensuring that its rights are protected, stating, “We will take all necessary legal measures in accordance with applicable regulations.” He added that Al Hilal aims to maintain transparency with its supporters by keeping them updated on the evolving situation.

Renan Lodi joined the Saudi giants in January 2023, quickly establishing himself as a key player. During his tenure last season, he made 24 appearances and found the back of the net three times. In the current campaign, he played 11 matches, starting in 10 of them and appearing once as a substitute. His departure marks a significant shift for Al Hilal, who have invested heavily in players this season, with a reported spending increase of 20% compared to the previous year.
