Saudi Arabia Prepares for Decisive Group H Match Against Cape Verde at NRG Stadium

HOUSTON — The Saudi Arabia national football team is scheduled to face Cape Verde in their final Group H fixture of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at NRG Stadium on Saturday, June 27, 2026. The match serves as a direct elimination scenario for the Green Falcons, who must secure a victory to remain eligible for advancement to the Round of 32.

Following a 4–0 opening defeat against Spain, head coach Georgios Donis successfully reorganized the Saudi defensive system for the second group match, securing a 1–1 draw against Uruguay. The tactical adjustment limited Uruguay’s attacking options to just four shots on target, with defender Abdulelah Al-Amri scoring the opening goal in the 41st minute before Uruguay managed to equalize late in the match. The disciplined performance demonstrated the squad’s defensive resilience and structural adaptability under intense pressure.

The current Group H standings place Spain in first position with four points and a +4 goal difference. They are followed by Uruguay and Cape Verde, who are tied in second and third place with two points each and an even goal difference. Saudi Arabia currently sits in fourth position with one point, having scored one goal and conceded five across their first two matches.

A victory over Cape Verde would elevate Saudi Arabia to four points, granting them an opportunity to qualify either as the group runner-up or as one of the best third-placed teams, depending on the outcome of the simultaneous fixture between Spain and Uruguay.

Team captain Salem Al-Dawsari will lead the veteran core alongside goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais and defender Saud Abdulhamid. Donis has reported no new injuries following Tuesday’s training sessions in Austin, allowing the full 26-man roster to be available for selection.
