JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia — Saudi Arabia secured a 1–0 victory over Kuwait in the opening fixture of the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup (Khaleeji 27) on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah. The tournament opening coincided with the Kingdom’s 96th Saudi National Day celebrations.
The decisive goal came in the 73rd minute when a shot taken inside the penalty box by Saudi winger Hammam Al-Hammami deflected off Kuwaiti defender Yousef Al-Haqan for an own goal. With the win, Saudi Arabia earned three points to take first place in Group A, following a 1–1 draw between Iraq and Oman in the group’s earlier fixture.
The match marked the start of the first Arabian Gulf Cup staged in Jeddah, as previous editions hosted in Saudi Arabia, including the 2014 tournament, were held in Riyadh. The 2026 competition also represents the first edition in tournament history where match outcomes officially award points toward the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking, as confirmed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The tournament was formally inaugurated on behalf of King Salman by Prince Saud bin Mishaal bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Governor of Makkah Region. The opening delegation included Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, Saudi Minister of Sports; Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al-Thani, President of the Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation; and Gianni Infantino.
The eight-nation tournament runs through October 6, 2026, culminating in the final at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium. In the second round of Group A fixtures on Saturday, September 26, Saudi Arabia faces Oman at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, while Kuwait plays Iraq.
