Saud Abdulhamid makes history as the first Saudi player to play in the French league.

PARIS — In a historic moment for Saudi football, Saud Abdulhamid made his debut in the French top flight on Thursday night, becoming the first player from Saudi Arabia to compete in Ligue 1. The talented defender came on as a second-half substitute in RC Lens’ narrow 1-0 defeat against Lyon during the opening round of the season.

Abdulhamid, who was signed on a season-long loan from Serie A side AS Roma, was greeted with enthusiastic applause from the home crowd at Stade Bollaert-Delelis. This landmark appearance signifies a notable expansion of Saudi football’s influence on the global stage, an advancement that coincides with a surge in the number of Saudi players transitioning to European leagues.

Despite the loss, Abdulhamid’s entry into the match marks a significant personal achievement for the Saudi international. According to recent statistics, the presence of players from Saudi Arabia in top-tier European competitions has increased by 25% over the past two years, indicating a rising trend that promises greater representation.

The only goal of the match was scored in first-half stoppage time (45+1) by Georgian striker Georges Mikautadze, who capitalized on an assist from Belgian winger Malick Fofana, one of Lyon’s standout performers on the evening. Lyon’s victory is particularly noteworthy as it follows a recent period of financial uncertainty, attributed to the departure of former owner John Textor.

This match also marks a turning point for Lyon, who had initially faced ineligibility for the top division under French financial regulations. However, new president Michele Kang successfully convinced regulators of the club’s financial stability for the 2026 season, allowing them to compete this year.
