SHARJAH — In a tense encounter on Monday, Al Hilal SFC continued their impressive streak in the AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26, securing a narrow 1-0 victory against Sharjah FC. This latest win keeps Al Hilal at the pinnacle of the standings, extending their lead to 18 points. With three matches remaining, they have already qualified for the Round of 16, showcasing their dominance in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Sharjah FC stands at seven points after a valiant effort on home turf. Statistics reveal that 65% of the match’s possession was held by Sharjah, highlighting their relentless pursuit of a goal, but their attempts fell short.
Sharjah head coach José Morais opted for a tactical shift, making three changes from the side that recently claimed victory against Al Ahli Saudi FC on Matchday Five. Igor Coronado, Ousmane Camara, and Caio Lucas were reinstated in the starting lineup, hoping to bolster their attacking options.
On the other hand, Al Hilal implemented five changes, welcoming back Rúben Neves in a pivotal central midfield role.
The match kicked off with the home team finding their rhythm early on. Coronado nearly put Sharjah in the lead in the 6th minute, forcing Al Hilal goalkeeper Mohammed Al Yami to make a spectacular save from a well-taken free-kick.
Al Hilal quickly retaliated in the 14th minute, as Neves intercepted a clearance and unleashed a powerful shot, only for Marcos Leonardo to squander the golden chance from close range.
Sharjah remained a constant threat, with Caio Lucas coming close in the 28th minute, but Al Yami once again displayed his skills with a remarkable save.
In a pivotal moment, Coronado thought he had scored in the 34th minute, but his effort was disallowed for offside following a VAR review. The first half concluded with Al Hosani making an impressive low save to deny Theo Hernández’s volley, keeping the scoreline level.
The second half resumed with heightened intensity; Al Yami was called into action twice within a minute, thwarting attempts from Camara and Majid Surour. Sharjah pressed on, with Caio Lucas narrowly flagged offside in the 68th minute.
Al Hilal threatened as well, with attempts from Malcom, Hernández, and Leonardo, but they were met with stern resistance from the Sharjah defense.
Finally, the deadlock was broken in the 81st minute. João Cancelo drove into the penalty area, delivering a precise pass to Malcom. The latter made no mistake, striking a powerful shot into the top right corner, securing all three points and ensuring Al Hilal’s perfect record continues in the tournament.
