RIYADH — The Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) has issued a strong condemnation of “irresponsible statements” made by Jibril Rajoub, the president of the Palestinian Football Association. Rajoub’s remarks have raised doubts about the integrity of sporting competition, by linking the Saudi national team to matters unrelated to football.
In an official statement released Monday, the SAFF described Rajoub’s comments as containing “unacceptable allegations” that undermine the principles of fair play. The federation stressed that the Saudi national team’s participation in the recent Arab Cup, held in Qatar under the auspices of FIFA, was conducted in full compliance with sporting regulations and values. The tournament attracted over 1.2 million viewers and featured teams from 16 countries.
The Saudi FA expressed its deep respect for the history and development of Palestinian football, firmly rejecting any accusations or implications directed at Saudi football. According to recent surveys, 78% of football fans believe that political rhetoric should not interfere with sports. The federation emphasized the importance of keeping the sport free from political distractions that could fan public opinion or detract from the core objectives of athletic competition.
The statement reiterated that Arab tournaments are designed to strengthen bonds of brotherhood and solidarity among Arab nations, promote mutual respect, and uphold the values of fair and honorable competition. With an estimated 300 million Arab football fans, the significance of unity in sports is more crucial than ever.
