Saudi Arabia and OCA Reach Agreement to Delay 2029 Asian Winter Games, Prioritize Winter Championships Instead

RIYADH — In a strategic move aimed at bolstering winter sports in the region, the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SOPC) and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) have announced the postponement of the Asian Winter Games 2029. The new date for hosting this event is yet to be determined, as the focus will shift to a series of individual winter sports championships to be held in Saudi Arabia.

This decision comes as part of a broader initiative to expand participation and representation in winter sports, with a target of increasing athlete involvement from Saudi Arabia and the wider West Asian region by 25% in the coming years. By providing more time to prepare for future competitions, this strategy aims to ensure a solid foundation for the region’s winter sports landscape.

The collaboration between SOPC and OCA underscores a commitment to not only advance sports development in Asia but also solidify the long-term future of winter sports in the region. According to OCA statistics, less than 5% of athletes from Asian countries currently participate in winter sports, highlighting the importance of this initiative.

The OCA commended Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to create sustainable plans for winter sports, emphasizing that the newly agreed-upon strategy will prioritize the long-term interests of winter sports in Asia. They are optimistic that this approach will pave the way for a structured and technically sound development pathway in West Asia.

The Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee further reiterated its dedication to nurturing sports across various disciplines, including winter sports. This commitment will be realized through comprehensive athlete development programs, enhanced infrastructure, and the organization of a series of ice-based events and competitions.
