RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — High-ranking Saudi Pro League (SPL) officials have initiated preliminary inquiries regarding a historic transfer for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) superstar and reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, according to reports from Sky Sports and international wires on Friday, January 30.
The move marks a strategic shift in the Kingdom’s recruitment policy, transitioning from veteran acquisitions to securing elite talent in their prime. Dembélé, 28, is reportedly being viewed as a “marquee successor” to the league’s first wave of global icons, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, whose initial three-year contracts are approaching their final stages.
Data from the 2024–25 season underscores Dembélé’s current elite status; he recorded 35 goals and 14 assists in 53 appearances, leading PSG to a historic European treble. Despite having two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract at the Parc des Princes, negotiations for a renewal have reportedly stalled. PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi recently emphasized a strict club-wide salary cap, stating, “The team and the club are more important than anyone,” a stance that may provide the financial opening for a record-breaking Saudi proposal.
While a representative for the French international stated that Dembélé remains “fully focused on PSG and the upcoming World Cup,” SPL officials are reportedly preparing a “dizzying” financial package to be presented following the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer.
The potential deal would follow Al-Hilal’s recent aggressive market activity, including the preliminary €30 million agreement for 18-year-old French talent Mohamed Kader Meite. Industry analysts suggest that if the Dembélé transfer materializes, it would represent the most significant financial commitment in Saudi football history, potentially exceeding the €100 million mark for a single transfer fee.
