RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — In the final hours of the winter transfer window, world-class striker and 2022 Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema has reportedly reached a preliminary agreement to join league leaders Al-Hilal, marking a seismic shift in the Saudi Pro League (SPL) hierarchy.
The move comes after a rapid breakdown in relations between Benzema and Al-Ittihad management. According to reports from L’Équipe and AFP on Monday, February 2, the 38-year-old forward felt “insulted” by a contract renewal offer from Al-Ittihad that reportedly included a significant salary reduction, with some sources claiming the base salary was reduced to nearly zero in favor of image rights. Benzema has been absent from Al-Ittihad’s last two matchday squads and has reportedly informed the Jeddah-based club of his desire to leave immediately.
Al-Hilal, currently leading the SPL standings, moved quickly to secure the Frenchman as a potential replacement for Marcos Leonardo, who is attracting interest from European clubs. The reported agreement consists of a six-month deal to finish the 2025/26 season, though Benzema’s representatives are reportedly pushing for a one-and-a-half-year contract extending through June 2027.
The Public Investment Fund (PIF), which holds majority stakes in both clubs, has reportedly intervened to ensure the star remains within the Saudi top flight despite interest from Italian giants Juventus. Benzema’s stats for the current campaign remain elite, with 8 goals in 14 league appearances, contributing to a total of 54 goals in 83 matches since joining the “Tigers” in 2023.
While an official statement from Al-Hilal is expected before the transfer deadline at midnight, the move has already caused ripples across the league. Reports suggest Al-Nassr’s Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed frustration to club leadership regarding Al-Hilal’s ability to further strengthen their squad while other top-four rivals remain quiet in the winter market.
