JEDDAH —
In a significant announcement ahead of the crucial AFC Asian Qualifiers clash, Saudi Arabia’s head coach Hervé Renard expressed his team’s unwavering commitment to qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Speaking at a press conference in Jeddah, Renard described the impending match against Iraq as one of the most pivotal moments of his career.

With just 24 hours until kick-off, the French coach radiated confidence and calm within the Green Falcons camp at King Abdullah Sports City. “Our objective has been crystal clear from the start — to qualify for the World Cup,” he stated. “Upon my return to lead the national team, I felt a deep trust in these players, bolstered by the strong support from the federation president. Football, much like life, presents numerous challenges, but I thrive on them. We are highly motivated to take a leap towards qualification.”

Remarkably, statistics show that Saudi Arabia has not qualified for the World Cup since their last appearance in 2006. A victory in the upcoming match would provide them with a crucial edge in the qualifying round, as they seek to improve upon their current standing.

Renard underscored the importance of results, asserting, “All preparation means nothing without a victory tomorrow.” He cited the experience of players like Saleh Al Shehri, Salem Al Dawsari, and Hassan Al Tambakti as key assets to their strategy. “Our sole aim is to win and secure qualification,” he added.

Calling the match against Iraq a “personal milestone,” Renard noted, “For me, this is the most critical match in my coaching career — I’ll elaborate post-match. We are aware of Iraq’s caliber and the importance of this encounter. In 2018, we qualified from this very stadium after defeating Japan, and in 2022, we bested Australia. Tomorrow, we aim to replicate that success against Iraq.”

Addressing concerns over the team’s defensive capabilities, Renard reassured fans, stating, “There’s no reason for worry regarding our defense. We are organized and fully prepared for this contest.”

In alignment with his coach’s sentiments, forward Saleh Al Shehri affirmed a winning mentality among the players, even as they only require a draw to advance. “We’re approaching the match ready to clinch a win. While a draw may suffice, our aim is to secure all three points. The ultimate goal is World Cup qualification.”

Al Shehri also acknowledged the support from teammates and fans, emphasizing the full readiness of the squad. “Players like Al Aboud and Kanno are essential to our success — we’re thankful for Al Aboud’s recovery. Regardless of who takes to the pitch, we’ll all give our utmost for the national team. Our fans’ incredible support in previous matches has elevated our momentum, and we hope to celebrate qualification with them tomorrow night.”

He concluded, “This is the most significant match of the season. It’s imperative that we maintain our focus so we can leave the field with pride and happiness in achieving qualification.”
