Fans clash at Lionel Messi event in India following his short appearance at the stadium.

KOLKATA — Chaos erupted at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium as angry fans expressed their disappointment during Lionel Messi’s promotional appearance. Following the early departure of the football icon, who was escorted away after just 20 minutes, violence ensued, with attendees vandalizing seating and throwing objects onto the pitch.

Many supporters, who paid as much as 12,000 rupees (approximately $133) for the experience, reported they were unable to catch a proper glimpse of the Argentina and Inter Miami superstar. Messi’s brief stroll around the pitch was largely obstructed by a wall of officials and celebrities surrounding him.

According to local media reports, the mood soured as the appearance came to an abrupt end, leading to disturbances such as the ripping up of seats, throwing plastic chairs, and even a storming of the pitch. Witnesses noted that about 30% of the 40,000 attendees reacted violently, highlighting the anger brewing among fans.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock and concern over the incident, pledging to conduct an inquiry aimed at identifying those responsible and ensuring such disruptions do not occur in the future.

In a follow-up, police confirmed the arrest of the event’s chief organizer and announced they are considering refund options for the ticket holders affected by the unrest.

Messi’s visit to India is part of his “GOAT” tour, a promotional series that spans multiple cities. The All India Football Federation clarified that it was not involved in organizing the event, distancing itself from the fallout. — Agencies
