JEDDAH — In a dramatic playoff encounter that saw host nation Saudi Arabia exit the FIBA Asia Cup, they fell 95-88 to the Philippines after an intense overtime period on Monday. This loss marks a continuation of Saudi Arabia’s long wait for a quarterfinal appearance, the last being in 2005.
Despite their effort, the Saudi team was unable to secure the win as the highly experienced Philippines squad rallied, highlighted by Justin Brownlee’s clutch three-pointer in the dying seconds of regulation that forced the extra period.
The Philippines—known affectionately as “Gilas”—will now advance to face two-time defending champions Australia in the quarterfinals.
Brownlee was the star performer for the Filipinos, amassing 29 points, including three three-pointers, along with five assists and four rebounds. Meanwhile, AJ Edu contributed significantly with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and a pivotal block. Kevin Quiambao also made a crucial impact during overtime, scoring 17 points.
In a standout display for Saudi Arabia, Mohammad Ali Abdulrahman netted an impressive 33 points, including eight three-pointers, complemented by five rebounds and four assists.
The Philippines established early dominance in the first quarter through the shooting skills of Brownlee, the inside presence of Edu, and Quiambao’s scoring, securing a double-digit lead. However, Saudi Arabia mounted a fierce comeback in the second quarter, with Abdulrahman hitting consecutive three-pointers and Musab Qadi adding another, resulting in a 14-1 run that briefly gave the hosts a lead.
With Mohammed Al-Suwailem joining Abdulrahman’s efforts in the third quarter, the Saudis maintained the lead for a significant stretch until Scottie Thompson’s late drive allowed the Philippines to reclaim a 60-59 advantage heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter witnessed a dramatic shift when Abdulrahman’s seventh three-pointer, along with a corner triple from Marzouq Al-Muwallad, extended Saudi Arabia’s lead to six points. However, Brownlee and Edu spearheaded the Philippines’ resurgence.
With just eight seconds remaining and Saudi Arabia leading 79-76 after a putback from Al-Suwailem, Brownlee silenced the home crowd with a game-tying three-pointer to send the match into overtime.
Once in the extra period, the Philippines took control, with Quiambao’s initial three-pointer setting the tone followed by contributions from Ramos and Brownlee. Edu ultimately secured the victory with a crucial triple in the final minute, sealing Saudi Arabia’s fate.
The game featured a significant audience, reflective of the passion surrounding this regional tournament, where Saudi Arabia continues to seek a return to basketball prominence after nearly two decades.
