Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Sport, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, has announced that the Kingdom is preparing to deliver what he calls the “most exciting World Cup ever” when it hosts the FIFA World Cup in 2034. His remarks come as Saudi Arabia accelerates planning for the tournament, which is expected to be the largest global sporting event the country has ever staged.
A Vision That Goes Beyond Football
According to recent statements, Saudi Arabia aims to transform the 2034 World Cup into an immersive cultural and sporting experience. The Kingdom is preparing to host matches across five major cities, with projections estimating that more than five million fans will attend throughout the tournament.
Prince Abdulaziz emphasized that the event will showcase Saudi Arabia’s natural and cultural landmarks — including destinations such as AlUla, the Red Sea coast, and the Asir highlands. The goal is to combine elite football with tourism, cultural exposure, and modern entertainment, making the tournament more than a sporting event.
Learning From 2026
Saudi officials will attend the 2026 World Cup in North America to study operations, logistics, fan-experience systems, and stadium management for a 48-team format. The Kingdom intends to apply this research as it designs its own fan-first strategy for 2034.
Stadiums and Infrastructure
The Kingdom is currently developing world-class stadiums and infrastructure to support the tournament. Projects include the King Salman International Stadium, expected to host both the opening match and the final, and additional modern venues in Riyadh and other major cities.
These facilities are part of a broader sports-infrastructure upgrade connected to Vision 2030, aiming to elevate Saudi Arabia as a global destination for major international sporting events.
Responding to Global Expectations
Prince Abdulaziz has acknowledged international scrutiny surrounding Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the World Cup but remains confident in the Kingdom’s long-term planning. He reiterated that preparations for a potential FIFA bid began as early as 2018, reflecting sustained government backing.
He also highlighted ambitions for the Saudi domestic league, expressing hopes that it will soon rank among the world’s top five leagues in terms of quality, commercial strength, and global audience numbers.
A Tournament With a Legacy
Saudi Arabia intends for the 2034 World Cup to leave a lasting positive impact. Beyond infrastructure, the Kingdom aims to leverage the tournament to grow football participation, strengthen sports development programs, and reinforce its position as a global sports hub.
With massive investments underway and a clear strategic vision, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself to deliver a World Cup that blends world-class football, innovation, and Saudi cultural identity — a tournament the minister believes will set a new global standard.
